Medical Assistants are integral members of the health care teams at St. Luke’s. They are employed in nearly every primary and specialty clinic within the St. Luke’s system, located in Duluth, Superior, Hibbing, Mountain Iron, Silver Bay, Two Harbors, and Ashland.

What is a medical assistant?

The medical assistant performs a variety of tasks to assist doctors and mid-level practitioners in providing patient care, including escorting patients to exam rooms, checking vital signs, and coordinating ongoing care.

Formal job summary: The medical assistant, under the medical direction of the clinic physicians and the general administrative direction of the clinic manager, is responsible for providing assistance to the physicians and mid-level practitioners through coordination of the patients visit and performing designated procedures and patient care. The medical assistant also participates in quality and safety control and provides support services within the clinic when not providing patient care.


Am I required to have a medical assistant certification?

Yes, you are required to have a medical assistant certification within 120 days of joining our team.

How much do medical assistants earn?

Starting pay for clinic assistants at St. Luke's is more than $15 per hour if you have just finished school, and higher for people with experience. If I’m not already trained, where can I go to school?

Two schools in our region offer medical assistant degrees, and all have openings in the next round of admissions.

How long does school take?

Length varies slightly by school, but most programs can be completed in 15 months or less.


What will the job market be like after I graduate?

There is high demand for medical assistants and it’s expected to see dramatic growth. Employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 29 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations.*
