Improving access to specialty care through telemedicine
To make health care even more accessible and convenient for patients, St.
Luke's now offers telemedicine appointments. Using telecommunications
technology, telemedicine gives patients the ability to see a specialist
without having to travel long distances.
Telemedicine visits are nearly identical to a regular office visit, except
that the specialist is at another location while you and a medical assistant
are at your local clinic. Using a computer webcam and special tools, such
as a magnified camera for close-up exams and an electronic stethoscope
to transmit heart and lung sounds, the assistant helps your provider complete
a full assessment in the privacy of an exam room. During the appointment,
your provider can also order tests, new prescriptions and medication changes.
For many patients, all visits can be accomplished via telemedicine, while
for others, the initial appointment and certain follow-up appointments
may need to take place in person.
